Heart valve prosthesis implantation is a surgical procedure aimed at replacing a diseased or malfunctioning heart valve with an artificial or biological prosthetic valve. The heart has four valves – the aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves – which regulate blood flow through the heart and into the bloodstream. When any of these valves become narrowed (stenosis) or leak (regurgitation), it can lead to various complications, including heart failure, arrhythmias, and decreased overall health. The surgical process typically begins with the patient being placed under general anesthesia, followed by a midline sternotomy or less invasive techniques such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), depending on the patient's condition. In traditional open-heart surgery, the surgeon makes an incision down the center of the chest and utilizes tools to delicately split the sternum, providing access to the heart. The heart is then often stopped temporarily to perform the procedure safely, with the patient connected to a heart-lung machine that takes over the heart's pumping function and oxygenates the blood. Once exposed, the damaged valve is carefully removed, and the new prosthetic valve is sutured into place. Prosthetic valves can be either mechanical or biological; mechanical valves are made from durable materials designed to last a lifetime but require lifelong anticoagulation therapy to prevent blood clots, while biological valves, derived from animal tissue, may not last as long but often don't require prolonged anticoagulation therapy. After the new valve is securely implanted, the heart is restarted, and the blood flow is redirected from the heart-lung machine back to the heart. The surgeon meticulously checks for any bleeding or irregularities before closing the sternum and stitching up the incision. Postoperative care is crucial, as it involves monitoring the patient for signs of complications, such as infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to medications. Patients typically spend several days in the hospital, followed by weeks to months of rehabilitation to regain strength and ensure optimal heart function. This procedure significantly improves quality of life and survival rates for patients with valvular heart disease, enabling them to resume normal activities and enjoy a better prognosis. However, like all surgeries, it carries risks, including infection, stroke, or prosthetic valve dysfunction; hence, careful patient selection and preoperative assessment are essential for success.
